How it was worked out
- BMI. 70 kg ÷ (1.65 m × 1.65 m) = 25.7. (World Health Organization, body mass index classification for adults)
- Classes. WHO: 18.5 to 24.9 is normal, 25 overweight, 30 obese, so 25.7 is overweight. For Asian populations the risk starts lower, at 23 and 27.5, so it is overweight. (WHO Expert Consultation, Appropriate body-mass index for Asian populations, The Lancet, 2004)
- Resting energy. Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × 70 + 6.25 × 165 − 5 × 35 − 161 = 1,395 kcal. (Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST et al., A new predictive equation for resting energy expenditure in healthy individuals, Am J Clin Nutr, 1990)
- Daily calories. 1,395 kcal × 1.375 for light activity = 1,918 kcal. About 500 kcal a day less or more is about 0.5 kg a week.
- This is not medical advice. BMI does not tell muscle from fat, and the equation is an estimate. Talk to a doctor or a registered nutritionist-dietitian before a diet.
- For adults 18 and over. Children and teenagers are read on growth charts, not these classes. Not for pregnancy.
- The activity factors (1.2 to 1.9) are the ones commonly used with the equation; your real burn may differ by 10% or more.
