Price without VAT

₱10,000.00

For a ₱11,200 amount that includes VAT, 12% VAT, the VAT-exclusive amount is ₱10,000.00, the VAT is ₱1,200.00 and the total is ₱11,200.00.

Invoice
VAT-exclusive amount₱10,000.00
VAT (12%)₱1,200.00
Total invoice amount₱11,200.00

How it was worked out

  1. VAT. The price already holds 12% VAT, so the base is ₱11,200.00 ÷ 1.12 = ₱10,000.00 and the VAT is ₱11,200.00 − ₱10,000.00 = ₱1,200.00. (National Internal Revenue Code, Sections 106 and 108, as amended by RA 10963 (TRAIN): 12% VAT)
  2. Expanded withholding. None: the customer is not a withholding agent, or you chose to leave it out. (BIR Revenue Regulations No. 2-98, as amended: expanded withholding tax)
  3. What you collect. The customer pays the full ₱11,200.00.
  • The withheld amount is not lost: the seller credits it against its income tax using the BIR Form 2307.
  • Sales to the government also have a 5% final VAT withheld, which this tool leaves out.
  • Whether a sale is zero-rated or exempt depends on the transaction; check with your accountant or the BIR.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How do I remove 12% VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.12. The answer is the VAT-exclusive amount, and the difference is the VAT. For ₱11,200 that is ₱10,000 plus ₱1,200 VAT.

How do I add 12% VAT to a price?

Multiply the VAT-exclusive amount by 1.12. ₱10,000 becomes ₱11,200, of which ₱1,200 is VAT.

What is the difference between zero-rated and VAT-exempt?

Both charge the customer no VAT. A zero-rated seller can still claim the input VAT on its purchases; an exempt seller cannot.

Is the 1% or 2% withholding computed on the amount with VAT?

No. The expanded withholding is computed on the amount net of VAT: 1% for goods and 2% for services.
