How it was worked out

  1. Loan amount. 70% of the ₱20,000.00 appraised value: ₱20,000.00 × 70% = ₱14,000.00. (Presidential Decree No. 114, the Pawnshop Regulation Act)
  2. Cash you receive. The service charge is collected when the loan is made: ₱14,000.00 − ₱5.00 = ₱13,995.00. (Presidential Decree No. 114, the Pawnshop Regulation Act)
  3. Months charged. 2026-11-08 to 2027-01-08 is 61 days. Counting 30-day months, a part of a month as a whole one, that is 3 months.
  4. Interest. 3% of ₱14,000.00 is ₱420.00 a month; × 3 = ₱1,260.00. (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, regulations for pawnshops)
  5. Redemption amount. ₱14,000.00 + ₱1,260.00 = ₱15,260.00.
  • Many pawnshops deduct the first month's interest when the loan is made. You then receive less cash and owe one month less at redemption; the total cost is the same.
  • Some pawnshops charge the days after the first month by the day rather than as a whole month, which costs less. Check the terms printed on your pawn ticket.
  • An unredeemed item may be sold at auction after the grace period that follows the maturity date. Renew or redeem before then.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How is pawnshop interest computed?

Multiply the loan amount by the monthly rate on the pawn ticket and by the number of months until you redeem. At 3% a month, a ₱14,000 loan costs ₱420 a month.

How much will a pawnshop lend on my item?

A share of the appraised value, which each pawnshop sets. At 70%, an item appraised at ₱20,000 gets a ₱14,000 loan.

What happens if I cannot redeem my item on the maturity date?

You can usually renew by paying the interest due, or redeem within the grace period after maturity. After that the pawnshop may sell the item at a public auction, with notice.

Is a part of a month charged as a full month?

At most pawnshops, yes. Some charge the extra days by the day instead, so read the terms printed on your pawn ticket.
