A 60-minute salon service with ₱250 in products, a ₱150-an-hour stylist and ₱80,000 monthly overhead over 400 services costs ₱600.00, so a 40% margin means a price of ₱1,000.00.

How it was worked out

  1. Direct cost. Stylist's time: 60 min ÷ 60 × ₱150.00 = ₱150.00. With ₱250.00 in products, the direct cost is ₱400.00.
  2. Overhead share. ₱80,000.00 a month ÷ 400 services = ₱200.00 per service. Total cost: ₱400.00 + ₱200.00 = ₱600.00.
  3. Price at the target margin. ₱600.00 ÷ (1 − 40%) = ₱1,000.00, so ₱400.00 of every sale is profit.
  4. Break-even. Each service leaves ₱1,000.00 − ₱400.00 = ₱600.00 toward overhead. ₱80,000.00 ÷ ₱600.00 = 133.33, so 134 services a month cover it.
  • Margin here is profit as a share of the price before VAT, not a markup on cost. A 40% margin is a 67% markup.
  • Overhead is rent, utilities, salaries not tied to a service, supplies, and equipment wear. Include all of it or the price comes out too low.
  • A salon must register for VAT once its gross sales go over ₱3,000,000 a year; below that it pays percentage tax instead. Check with the BIR.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How do I price a salon service?

Add the product cost, the stylist's pay for the time it takes and the service's share of monthly overhead. Divide that cost by one minus your target margin to get the price.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A ₱600 cost sold at ₱1,000 is a 40% margin and a 67% markup.

Does a salon in the Philippines charge VAT?

Only if it is VAT-registered, which is required once gross sales go over ₱3,000,000 a year. A smaller salon pays percentage tax instead unless it chose to register for VAT.

How many clients does my salon need to break even?

Divide the monthly overhead by what each service leaves after products and the stylist's pay. That number of services a month covers the overhead.
