How it was worked out

  1. Cash price. ₱60,000.00 − 5% discount (₱3,000.00) = ₱57,000.00.
  2. Installment balance. ₱60,000.00 − ₱10,000.00 down payment = ₱50,000.00. The 5% surcharge on it is ₱2,500.00, so ₱52,500.00 is paid in installments.
  3. Each installment. ₱52,500.00 ÷ 10 = ₱5,250.00.
  4. Cash against installment. ₱10,000.00 + ₱52,500.00 = ₱62,500.00 on installment, against ₱57,000.00 cash: a difference of ₱5,500.00.
  • The discount, down payment, surcharge and due dates are your school's own policy. Check the assessment form or the accounting office.
  • Some schools apply the cash discount to tuition only, not to miscellaneous and other fees. If yours does, enter the discount as a share of the whole bill.
  • Late payment penalties, books, uniforms and outside fees are left out.

Questions

Asked and answered.

Is it cheaper to pay tuition in full or in installments?

Paying in full is almost always cheaper: the school gives a cash discount and the installment plan adds a surcharge. The difference is both together, often 5% to 10% of the bill.

Who sets the tuition installment surcharge in the Philippines?

The school does. DepEd and CHED regulate tuition increases and require consultation, but the cash discount, down payment and installment terms are each school's own policy.

How is a tuition installment computed?

Subtract the down payment from the total, add the surcharge on that balance, and divide by the number of installments. ₱50,000 balance with a 5% surcharge over 10 months is ₱5,250 a month.

Does the cash discount apply to miscellaneous fees?

It depends on the school. Some take the discount off the whole bill and some off tuition only, so check the assessment form before comparing the two plans.
